How to Install and Activate a WordPress Theme

To create a website that matches your brand and looks professional, you need to install and activate a WordPress theme. You can install a WordPress theme using the WordPress directory, download it manually, or use an FTP client.

1. Install Using the WordPress Theme Directory

If you are going to use a free theme, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Locate Appearance and click Themes.
  3. Click the Add New button at the top of the page.
  4. Hover above your theme of choice to start the installation process.
  5. You can get a preview of your website using the theme by clicking the Live Preview button.
  6. Click Activate to use the theme.
  7. Visit your site to see how everything looks.

2. Install Through Downloading WordPress Themes

If you purchased a theme from a developer, you need to upload it before installing. Follow these steps to upload and install a theme:

  1. Download the theme’s .zip file to your local computer.
  2. Log into your WordPress dashboard.
  3. Locate Appearance and click Themes.
  4. Click the Upload Theme button at the top of the page to upload a theme you have previously downloaded.
  5. Click Choose File.

  7. Click Install Now and wait for the uploading process to complete.
  8. Click Activate to use the theme straight away.

3. Installing a WordPress Theme via FTP

A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) allows file exchange between computers and servers on a network. To install a theme via FTP:

  1. Open FileZilla, enter your login details, and click Quickconnect. If you are not familiar with this process, follow the steps in your FTP client’s guide to connect via FTP.
  2. Unzip the theme file first.
  3. Inside FileZilla, search for wp-content inside your WordPress directory, and open it.
  4. Go to the themes folder.
  5. Click the folder containing the template files.
  6. Drag and drop it into the themes folder. Your new theme will appear on the list of WordPress themes.
  7. Log into your WordPress dashboard.
  8. Locate Appearance and then click Themes.
  9. Search for your new theme on the list of installed themes.
  10. Click Activate.
  11. Check how you like your new site design.

Conclusion

A WordPress theme provides a consistent design to a WordPress site while maintaining its core features. Before installing a theme, consider your site type, compatibility, and budget to ensure you choose the best option for your needs.
