As the name implies, an addon domain is an additional domain name that you can add to your hosting plan. You can create this domain in your control panel, and it is a fully functional domain.
Your addon domain can have forwarders, email addresses, and more, just like your main (primary) domain on your account.
When you create an addon domain, a folder with the name of the domain will be created in the root directory unless you specify a different name or path for the folder. For the primary domain, a subdomain will be created and attached to the new folder. For example, [addon].maindomain.com
will be linked to the primary domain name with every addon domain, which can be used to preview websites as well.
Adding an Addon Domain
To add an addon domain, click on Create Domains after logging into cPanel, and then enter your domain at the top. The location of your document root will be in the last field.
Keep in mind that an addon domain name must be registered before users can actually access it.
If you enter a domain that resembles an existing domain on your account, the system will recommend creating a subdomain for that domain. This ensures that the nameservers properly manage the entries in the domain's zone file. You can access the Subdomains interface by going to cPanel, clicking on Home, Domains, and then on Subdomains.
Creating Multiple Addon Domains with Different Extensions
If you want to create several addon domains with different extensions (e.g., example.net and example.com), you will need to manually enter a unique username in the Subdomain text box.
The maximum number of addon domains you can create is displayed on your cPanel Statistics Sidebar. For Resellers, you can modify this number by going to WHM > List Account > Modify Account > Max Addon Domains.
Troubleshooting Zone Files
If the zone files of the registered domain are incorrect, you might encounter an error that prevents you from adding the domain. You can use the Zone Editor interface in cPanel by going to cPanel, clicking on Home, then Domains, and Zone Editor. The Zone Editor will help you correct the zone files for your domain.
