How to Set Up SMTP in cPanel
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a set of communication protocols used by applications to send emails over the internet to servers. Most email software is designed to use SMTP to communicate when sending outgoing messages.
SMTP settings are used for outgoing mail servers, and outgoing emails are sent using SMTP. There are also two other protocols, POP3 and IMAP, which are used for incoming settings to retrieve and store emails. These two settings are necessary for properly configuring any mail client to communicate with your host's mail server.
Basics of Setting Up SMTP in cPanel

Set Up Your Email Account:
The first step is to ensure that your email account is set up. If it’s not, follow this guide to set up your email accounts. -
Log In to Webmail:
Once the email account has been created, log in to your email address using your domain name/webmail. -
Connect Devices:
In front of the email account you want to configure SMTP for, click on Connect Devices. This will take you to another page where you will find the details you need to provide to your email client (username, SMTP port number of the outgoing server). -
Use These Details in Your Email Client:
- Full Email Address: Use this as the username in your email client or script.
- Password: The password for the email account you created.
- SMTP Host: Either your domain or the hostname of the server (e.g., mail.4xhost.com).
- Port: Typically, this will be either 465 or 25.
-
Configure the Email Client:
The next task is to configure your email client to connect to the server and authenticate. The required cPanel SMTP settings will be available in the Connect Devices interface. On this page, you will find the username, URL, and SMTP port number of the outgoing server. These are the details you will need to provide for your application.
-
Mail Client Manual Settings:
If the mail client or device you want to use is not listed, you can use the Mail Client Manual Settings listed at the bottom of the page. -
Use SSL/TLS for Increased Security:
We recommend using SSL/TLS settings instead of non-SSL settings, as they provide increased security for your email interactions.
There are many email clients available, but setting up SMTP to send through your server is usually straightforward.
